Theses and Dissertations

Theses (for master's degrees) and dissertations (for doctoral degrees) must adhere to content guidelines established by the student's faculty advisor and committee and format guidelines established by the College of Graduate Health Sciences and the University of Tennessee. Workshops are held shortly after the beginning of each semester for students planning to graduate the following December or May (check the Current Students page for specific information). Faculty advisors and other graduate students are welcome to attend. Standard forms and the manual (Guide to the Preparation of of Electronic Theses and Dissertations) are distributed at the workshop.

Students are required to submit an electronic thesis/dissertation.

It is the responsibility of the research committee and student to ensure that the scientific and English language content of a thesis/dissertation are as accurate as possible; it is the responsibility of the student and College to ensure that the thesis/dissertation format is as accurate as possible. The final version of a thesis/dissertation submitted to and approved by the College is the official version and will not be changed in any way (including substantive and typographic changes).

NOTE: Before submitting your thesis/dissertation for format review, you must

  1. Create a PDF/A-compliant document (see instructions under Guides and Forms).
  2. Create a UMI account (see instructions under Guides and Forms).
  3. Submit your PDF/A-compliant document through Blackboard (either the Workshop site or your own e-collaboration site).
  4. Email Shirley Hancock that you have uploaded your document to Blackboard.

Critical information: If information in your thesis/dissertation will undergo patent review, you must inform the Assistant Dean by requesting an embargo when you first submit your document for format review. You must also indicate a 2-year embargo in your UMI account.

Updates to Thesis/Dissertation Information
